それは、毎日いろんなアクセントの英語を聞けること。
最初は正直、
「お、ちょっと聞き取りにくいかも？」
「この発音、クセあるな〜」
と思うこともあります。
でも不思議なもので、何日か一緒に過ごしていると、ちゃんと耳が慣れてくるんですよね。
そして気づく。
TOEICのリスニング問題みたいな、いわゆる“きれいな英語”を話している人ばかりじゃない。
というか、世界では本当にいろんな英語が飛び交っています。アメリカ英語、イギリス英語、オーストラリア英語はもちろん、ヨーロッパの人が話す英語、アジアの人が話す英語、南米の人が話す英語。発音も違うし、リズムも違うし、言葉の選び方もそれぞれ違う。
でも、それで普通に会話は成り立っている。
これを実感すると、自分のちょっとしたアクセントとか、発音の完璧さとか、だんだん気にしすぎなくなります。
もちろん、伝わりやすい発音を目指すのは大事。
でもそれ以上に、
相手の話を聞こうとすること。
わからなかったら聞き返すこと。
とりあえず伝えようとしてみること。
間違えても会話を止めないこと。
目の前の人にちゃんと興味を持つこと。
そういうことの方が、ずっと大事だなと思います。
英語は、テストのためだけのものじゃない。
人と関わるためのもの。

One thing I’ve really gained from running THE EVERGREEN HOSTEL HIROSHIMA is this:
I get to hear so many different kinds of English every day.
At first, some accents may feel a little difficult to catch.
Sometimes I think,
“Oh, this pronunciation is new to me,”
or
“I need a little time to get used to this rhythm.”
But after spending a few days together, your ears naturally adjust.
And then you realize something important.
English is not only the clean, standard English you hear in TOEIC listening tests or textbooks.
In the real world, people speak English in so many different ways.
American English, British English, Australian English, European English, Asian English, Latin American English, and many more.
Different accents.
Different rhythms.
Different ways of choosing words.
And still, people communicate.
Once you experience that, you stop worrying so much about your own small accent or imperfect pronunciation.
Of course, clear pronunciation is helpful.
But there are more important things.
Trying to listen.
Asking again when you don’t understand.
Trying to communicate.
Not stopping the conversation just because you made a mistake.
Being interested in the person in front of you.
English is not only for tests.
It is a tool to connect with people.

Rates are per person and available for direct bookings by email, with cash payment. Utilities and Wi-Fi are included, with no deposit or additional fees. Towel rental is available. Stays start from one week.
料金はお一人あたり、メールでの直接予約・現金払いの場合です。水道光熱費とWi-Fi利用料を含み、デポジットや追加料金はありません。タオルのレンタルもあります。滞在は1週間から受け付けています。
